As a business 100% dedicated to Magento services it goes without saying that we have Magento's best interests at heart where platform success is concerned. However it has to be noted that the change in priorities (through it's multiple acquisitions) have left many merchants feeling jolted.
Our sister company ZERO-1 speak to hundreds of merchants a year and have a fantastic, grass-roots viewpoint on the landscape. They have been analysing the uptake of Magento 2 closely whilst also listening to the market and merchants of all sizes. We gathered a list of just over 10,000 UK Merchants using Magento between 2016-2018. We interrogated their websites in March 2020 and this is what we discovered.
By far the largest segment of Magento customers from 2016 are still on M1
Being the most accessible, free platform for the last 10 years, it’s not surprising to see it was the platform of choice for startups.
Migrated to other platforms Inc. Wix, Wordpress, IBM Websphere, BigCommerce, nopCommerce, OpenCart, Squarespace
Only 10% of merchants have moved from Magento 1 to M2.
WooCommerce has taken more M1 customers than Shopify
If this is indicative of the worldwide trends, then Shopify are not taking the market share as suggested by many sources, and there is still the majority of the market yet to migrate off Magento 1.
It's fair to say we were surprised by our data, given the reports of many merchants apparently moving to Shopify (what reports can we link to here that suggest this is the case?). Perhaps this is just effective marketing! Shopify have certainly dominated the Paid Google Ads space with terms like 'remove the headache' and choose Shopify, suggesting Magento 2 is now too complex and costly. We could not disagree more: with the correct team and automation, Magento 2 can be considerably cheaper than Shopify AND you can retain full control over your code.
This data was sourced from BuiltWith in 2016 and 2018 and has since been used to spider and identify the current platforms with a high degree of accuracy. It obviously does not include new customers to Magento (or any other platform) since 2018.
