At a time when costs are becoming increasingly prohibitive to smaller Magento merchants, we must look to innovation to drive a pathway to possibilities. Operations (i.e. how we go about building and running ecommerce platforms) is - and some might argue always has been - the Achilles Heel of Magento Merchant success. Magento Go was created to attempt to de-risk and bring stability for smaller merchants where so many experienced failed implementations from ill-equipped agencies. Today the same challenges still exist, with significant numbers jumping ship to Shopify for safe harbour in response to the soaring and erratic costs of Magento consultancy and development.
Over the last ten years our industry has seen technology driving massive leaps forward in customer-facing tech and the customer experience (think intelligence-led search driving conversions, personalisation, VR try-on services etc). But my prediction is that in 2020 the biggest changes in ecommerce are going to come from the use of automation tooling in the development and operations of Magento platforms.
Automation (across all industries) is driving game-changing transformation: accelerating speed to market, freeing up time to focus on creativity and higher value tasks, and above all else, enabling unparalleled innovation across organisations.
For the last 10 years working with Magento I've been asking more or less the same questions: "Why is there a lack of operational support tools for Magento? Why have Magento considered this important for Enterprise (ECE) customers only (a la Platform.sh), when clearly it's the keystone to cost-management for all Magento merchants? Why has Magento not furnished its Marketplace with an 'Operations' category?"
I believe we are going to rapidly see this change, and a number of automation-driven tools to enable Magento operations are now starting to appear.
It goes without saying that we have a product to serve this need, hence this article will be the first of many, which hopefully go on to cement our position leading this mission to bring disruptive innovation and automation to the Magento platform, to slash costs and to challenge thousands of merchants to rethink a move to Shopify (et al).
We're proud to be at the forefront of a revolution in the development of commercial solutions to automate operations with Magento. MDOQ® is already proving this many times over, being the productised output of a leading Magento agency in evolving from a service-driven company into a product, and one which is making big waves already.
